Guitar Hero Legend of Rock Game Play: 10 I really got a kick out of this game! I’ve played guitar since I was six years old. So, getting this little plastic axe in my hands, I had some reservations about whether I’d enjoy it or not. Obviously, I had a blast! The mechanics of the guitar worked flawlessly. The song list was well-rounded, and I actually found some songs I’d never heard that I ended up liking and purchasing on I Tunes. Another cool aspect was how quick my kids picked up on the game. We had a blast battling each other for bragging rights. Granted they stuck me with Expert mode, while they were able to choose Easy or Medium. Needless to say, I got crushed. Graphics: 8 The graphics of this game were all that they needed to be for their intended purposes. When you’re playing the songs, it’s not like you’re looking around at the surrounding environments; you’re pretty much just looking at the little colored dots to keep up with the song. So, since the note dots were colorful and vibrant, then the graphics accomplished what they needed to do. Sound: 8 The sound of the games was pretty decent. The songs were clear and concise. The only negatives, in my opinion were the ‘rock star’ mode where you lift the guitar. When this effect comes into play, the crowd effect comes into play, but it can be difficult to hear the song while your jamming like Eddie Van Halen. Secondly, the songs that don’t have the actual artists pale in comparison to the actual artists. They’re like a bad stand up jam session in some dive, with an awful cover band. Difficulty: Varies depending on the level. It goes from very easy to downright difficult in Expert mode. Concept: 8 Conceptually, it’s a no-brainer. You simply play the songs well enough to move along in your quest to be a rock star. You earn some money, trash some hotel rooms, buy some new axes and turn in up to 11 (had to add the Spinal Tap reference)! Overall: 9 The game did exactly what it aims to do . . . to entertain and give you an opportunity to rock! The soundtrack is varied with a good mix of current and classic tracks. Watching my little ones rock out and sing to Alice Cooper’s School’s Out just warms my heart. I hope that future installments include such a full song list that entertains and challenges at the same time. I’m disappointed in the Aerosmith version simply because I don’t think a lot of time went into building a good set list. There are not many songs, in my opinion, in that game. Furthermore, they could have pulled many more songs from Aerosmith’s catalog! So, if you’re going to play one of them, Legends of Rock is certainly the way to go.
